Hoje e amanhã serão dias com muita informação sobre a Microsoft e principalmente o Bill Gates. No dia 27 de Julho, amanhã, o BillG irá se desligar como FTE da Microsoft para "novos desafios".

   Esses novos desafios não são aqueles que nós sempre escutamos dos amigos quando eles trocam de empresa, agora o Bill realmente vai enfrentar desafios de mudar o mundo. Ele já conseguiu isso mudando a maneira que vemos a tecnologia (ora, em 1980 quem acreditava que todos iam ter um computador em casa, e utilizando do jeito que nós utilizamos hoje), agora ele deseja mudar a maneira como vivemos, onde quem sabe um dia todos vão poder ter acesso a cultura, saúde e comida.

   Com certeza não será nada fácil, mesmo com todo recurso ($$) disponível, mas agora ele terá que enfrentar problemas que não são resolvidos apenas com linhas de código, mas sim com virus, doenças (que sempre estão mudando e evoluindo), política, culturas e por ai vai.

   O mundo é grato pelo o que ele fez e vai continuar fazendo (ele frequentará a MS uma vez por semana), eu como um nerd (claro que não daqueles que costumam babar) vou sentir falta dele. Estranho dizer isso não é? Sentir falta de uma pessoa que nunca nem falou comigo e nem sabe que eu existo. Mas com certeza eu sei que quando ele estava na MS, ele estava forçando as pessoas no limite, pessoas com um QI superior, trazendo idéias e construindo softwares que hoje nós não conseguimos viver sem. E eu quero viver muito esses momentos de mudança, softwares novos, quebras de paradigma e inovações. São as chamadas "ondas de softwares"! Eu quero passar por muitas outras, como Office 14, Windows 7, Exchange 13, 14, 15 e assim por diante.

   Quem mais fez isso para nós trabalhadores que hoje dependemos do computador, do Office, do Windows, do e-mail, do file sever e etc? Claro que nesse mundo existem ótimos criadores de softwares, pessoas que pensavam além do básico. Steve Jobs vale ser mencionado, tanto quanto os criadores do Google. As maiores concorrentes da Microsoft tem seu mérito, mas não é só porque sou apaixonado pela Microsoft, eu não vejo o Mac sendo utilizado em todas os lares do mundo. Eu ainda acho que seu marketing share vai subir, hoje ele ainda é muito pequeno, mas não vai ameaçar o Windows. Cada um no seu lado, fazendo o que é bom.

   O Steve tem o poder de transformar algo bobo, fútil, em obra de arte, onde muitos invejam as pessoas que possuem seus produtos. Mérito todo dele, ele é bom nisso. E a Google? Quer um sistema de busca mais rápido e completo que o Google? Quem demora mais de 4 segundos para receber cerca de 2.000.000 de sites com a palavra que foi digitada? É impressionante. Mas a Microsoft não se limita a isso, ela atua em mais mercados que muitos imaginam (minha mãe por exemplo, ela com certeza só conhece o Windows e dificilmente o Office, que são produtos da MS).

   Essa mudança será apenas uma transição, como em qualquer outra empresa, mas ela tem o seu destaque por estarmos falando de Bill Gates. Não só o homem mais rico do mundo por 13 anos seguidos, mas sim um líder para muitos.

   Claro que a Microsoft não vai parar sem ele, mas certamente esta perdendo uma grande peça da sua estrutura. Espero que esta peça seja muito bem compensada com outros pilares, que vão continuar fortalecendo a Microsoft.

É isso ai pessoal, os dias de Full Time Employee do Bill Gates estão chegando ao fim, e com isso muitos sites estão postando as suas memórias desse gênio que revolucionou a forma com que trabalhamos hoje. Se não fosse o Windows, muitos de nós (eu principalmente :) não teria emprego hoje. O cara é phoda em muitas coisas, essa carinha de bobo não engana ninguem.

Quem ai já viu o filme Os piratas de Sillicon Valley? Cara, esse filme é clássico .. claro que nem tudo é a pura realidade, mas é muito bem dirigido e filmado.

Bom mas voltando ao tópico do post, vocês conhecem o verdadeiro Billg? Sabem que ele é duro com a sua equipe? Tipo, "essa é a pior idéia que eu já ouvi na vida" são coisas que ele fala para vários funcionários da MS, todos os dias, e eles já sabem que esse cargo de "pior idéia do mundo" não vai durar muito, pois logo outro vai ouvir isso dele.

Que tal um e-mail dele para o Jim Alchin, lá em 2003, sobre a usabilidade do então novo Windows XP? Ele estava apenas tentando instalar o Windows Movie Maker e o Digital Plus pack, mas acho que ele não gostou da experiencia .. ahahaha .. Recomendo ler tudo, o e-mail é muito engraçado:

I am quite disappointed at how Windows Usability has been going backwards and the program management groups don't drive usability issues.

Let me give you my experience from yesterday.

I decided to download (Moviemaker) and buy the Digital Plus pack ... so I went to Microsoft.com. They have a download place so I went there.

The first 5 times I used the site it timed out while trying to bring up the download page. Then after an 8 second delay I got it to come up.

This site is so slow it is unusable.

It wasn't in the top 5 so I expanded the other 45.

These 45 names are totally confusing. These names make stuff like: C:\Documents and Settings\billg\My Documents\My Pictures seem clear.

They are not filtered by the system ... and so many of the things are strange.

I tried scoping to Media stuff. Still no moviemaker. I typed in movie. Nothing. I typed in movie maker. Nothing.

So I gave up and sent mail to Amir saying - where is this Moviemaker download? Does it exist?

So they told me that using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated.

They told me to go to the main page search button and type movie maker (not moviemaker!).

I tried that. The site was pathetically slow but after 6 seconds of waiting up it came.

I thought for sure now I would see a button to just go do the download.

In fact it is more like a puzzle that you get to solve. It told me to go to Windows Update and do a bunch of incantations.

This struck me as completely odd. Why should I have to go somewhere else and do a scan to download moviemaker?

So I went to Windows update. Windows Update decides I need to download a bunch of controls. (Not) just once but multiple times where I get to see weird dialog boxes.

Doesn't Windows update know some key to talk to Windows?

Then I did the scan. This took quite some time and I was told it was critical for me to download 17megs of stuff.

This is after I was told we were doing delta patches to things but instead just to get 6 things that are labeled in the SCARIEST possible way I had to download 17meg.

So I did the download. That part was fast. Then it wanted to do an install. This took 6 minutes and the machine was so slow I couldn't use it for anything else during this time.

What the heck is going on during those 6 minutes? That is crazy. This is after the download was finished.

Then it told me to reboot my machine. Why should I do that? I reboot every night -- why should I reboot at that time?

So I did the reboot because it INSISTED on it. Of course that meant completely getting rid of all my Outlook state.

So I got back up and running and went to Windows Update again. I forgot why I was in Windows Update at all since all I wanted was to get Moviemaker.

So I went back to Microsoft.com and looked at the instructions. I have to click on a folder called WindowsXP. Why should I do that? Windows Update knows I am on Windows XP.

What does it mean to have to click on that folder? So I get a bunch of confusing stuff but sure enough one of them is Moviemaker.

So I do the download. The download is fast but the Install takes many minutes. Amazing how slow this thing is.

At some point I get told I need to go get Windows Media Series 9 to download.

So I decide I will go do that. This time I get dialogs saying things like "Open" or "Save". No guidance in the instructions which to do. I have no clue which to do.

The download is fast and the install takes 7 minutes for this thing.

So now I think I am going to have Moviemaker. I go to my add/remove programs place to make sure it is there.

It is not there.

What is there? The following garbage is there. Microsoft Autoupdate Exclusive test package, Microsoft Autoupdate Reboot test package, Microsoft Autoupdate testpackage1. Microsoft AUtoupdate testpackage2, Microsoft Autoupdate Test package3.

Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up.

But that is just the start of the crap. Later I have listed things like Windows XP Hotfix see Q329048 for more information. What is Q329048? Why are these series of patches listed here? Some of the patches just things like Q810655 instead of saying see Q329048 for more information.

What an absolute mess.

Moviemaker is just not there at all.

So I give up on Moviemaker and decide to download the Digital Plus Package.

I get told I need to go enter a bunch of information about myself.

I enter it all in and because it decides I have mistyped something I have to try again. Of course it has cleared out most of what I typed.

I try (typing) the right stuff in 5 times and it just keeps clearing things out for me to type them in again.

So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven't run Moviemaker and I haven't got the plus package.

The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind. I thought we had reached a low with Windows Network places or the messages I get when I try to use 802.11. (don't you just love that root certificate message?)

When I really get to use the stuff I am sure I will have more feedback.

Bom, para aqueles que ainda não conhecem o novo plano de certificações Microsoft, ou vou falar bem rápido. Agora o antigo MCP que era uma certificação para qualquer produto Microsoft, está sendo substituido pelo MCTS, mais específico para cada tecnologia que você faz a prova. Já os antigos MCSA e MCSE foram substituidos pelo MCTS e MCITP.

Passando isso tem o MCA, que é uma certificação de Arquiteto, muitooo difícil. Então existia um gap entre o MCITP e o MCA, uma folga muito grande entre as duas. Com isso chegou o Master, que pode ser de Exchange 2007, Windows Server 2008 ou SQL 2008.

Uma questão interessante que eu gostaria de compartilhar com vocês. Não sei se todos já estão trabalhando ou utilizando a virtualização Hyper-V, mas dentro do programa do produto surgiu uma dúvida legal, que seria como utilizar os integration components dentro de uma mídia bootável com WinPE para manutenção na máquina. Segue how-to de como fazer:

The new architecture of synthetic devices with Hyper-V poses some unique challenges for system administrators. Specifically, how can a system administrator perform maintenance on a Hyper-V host from WinPE? Without the integration components, users are required to move their VHD's around to the IDE controller, which limits the amount of VHD's that can be used at any given point in time.

Additionally, legacy network adapters might need to be added to the VM to provide network access.
However, by adding the integration components to a WinPE image, those are no longer concerns.
For those of you not familiar with WinPE, here's a brief overview:

Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) is a minimal operating system designed to prepare a computer for Windows installation. It can be used to start a computer with no operating system (a bare-metal system), to partition and to format hard drives, and to copy disk images or to initiate Windows Setup from a network share. Windows PE is available as a stand-alone product to customers with the proper licensing agreement. It is an integrated component of many Windows Setup and recovery technologies, including Setup for Windows Vista and Windows Deployment Services (WDS).

Windows PE 2.1 is the latest release based on the Microsoft® Windows Vista® operating system.

Now, on to the steps:

1.    Download and install the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK). This allows you to create a custom WinPE image. The AIK can be downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=94bb6e34-d890-4932-81a5-5b50c657de08&DisplayLang=en

2.    You need to extract two files from the c:\windows\system32\vmguest.iso file, which is part of Hyper-V RC1 (available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7EDAA89F-9F64-488D-93C0-858D2D8799DF). You will need to use a utility that allows the mounting of an ISO image. You can also mount the ISO image in a VM and extract the files as well.

You are looking for two files. Copy the file that is appropriate for your architecture:
  32 Bit: \support\x86\Windows6.0-KB951633-x86.msu
  64 Bit: \support\amd64\Windows6.0-KB951633-x64.msu

3.    Create a directory on the same system you installed the AIK, and store the file(s) above there.

4.    Open up the Windows PE User’s Guide. This was installed as part of the Windows AIK, and can be found (by default) by browsing to Start -> All Programs -> Windows OPK -> Documentation -> Windows PE User’s Guide.

5.    Follow steps 1-4 under Customizing WinPE -> Windows PE Walkthroughs -> Walkthrough: Create a Custom WinPE Image.

6.    After step 4 under Customizing WinPE (Optional: Add Additional Customizations), run the following script from your Windows PE Tools Command Prompt. Create a new batch file with the script below. Make sure that the MSUSOURCE is set to the directory where the files you copied in step 2 and 3 are, and that PESOURCE is set to the directory you created in Step 5.

Pessoal, quem lembra quando os primeiros notebooks com Windows SideShow foram mostrados e todo mundo ficou muito curioso para saber como isso iria ser utilizado no dia-a-dia? Os notebooks parecem que não vingaram, ou pelo menos, não foram lançados logo em seguida (talvez alguma falha no projeto), mas com isso o SideShow está meio de lado.

Mas as coisas estão para mudar. A Microsoft lançou uma versão do Windows SideShow para Windows Mobile, assim o seu celular smartphone, via Bluetooth, será um dispositivo SideShow para comunicar com o Vista. Isso vai ser interessante!! ainda mais depois dos Developers mandarem bala na programação e criar uma versão mais RTM (agora a versão ainda é Preview).
